Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Relic Expedition Cycle
Unidentified spoils, Jiera's appraisal, Freki, and why the loop stays in Norgan.
Relics are Dark Arisen’s loot language: unidentified spoils you pull out of Norgan, carry to the Norgandian Settlement, and pay Jiera in Rift Crystals to identify. Until appraisal they are almost flavor text — a helm, a light weapon, a vague spoil — and they do nothing on your back. After appraisal they become weapons and armor with randomized stats, bonuses, special effects, and sometimes unique or upgraded vocation skills. That loop is the Relic Expedition Cycle. It launches with the expansion on October 9, 2026, and it is the reason you will keep walking back into the snow after the story credits.
This is not the 2013 Bitterblack cursed-item dungeon copied one-to-one. Producer Naoto Oyama said the team wanted a similar identify-and-equip fantasy, then chose a wide region instead of a single isle. Director Kento Kinoshita has been blunt about the border: relic acquisition and appraisal happen only in Norgan so the north stays distinct. You are free to wear the finished gear anywhere, including every Lost Rites trial on the base map.
The loop, step by step
- Explore Norgan or kill its monsters. Spoils drop from foes and from the land itself — chests, corners, things Freki digs up.
- Leave them unidentified. They occupy inventory and pawn carry weight. They do not occupy a weapon slot.
- Return to the Norgandian Settlement. Talk to Jiera, the local wise woman.
- Spend Rift Crystals to appraise. Exact RC prices per tier are not published yet. Previews are clear that identification is not free, which is the point: you choose which spoils deserve the crystals.
- Read the roll. Attack, defence, stat bonuses, special effects, unique skills, upgraded skills, and other modifiers can appear depending on rank.
- Equip, stash, or vendor according to your vocation. Then go back out, because the next hunt is supposed to be harder than the last.
Kinoshita has said story quests around relics are often excuses to push you into new pockets of the map. Do the quests. Do not treat them as the entire system. The system is the repeatable expedition.
Jiera, Rift Crystals, and what not to identify
Jiera is the appraisal NPC. RC is the toll. Rift Crystals also still matter for hiring pawns, so Dark Arisen is asking you to budget the same currency across party and gear. That is a pain point you can plan for now: a rift full of perfect ice-resist Magick Archers will compete with a backpack full of gold-tier spoils. Hire less often, or farm RC with intent, or be ruthless about which greys you ignore.
Preview coverage describes at least three spoil tiers, with higher-level enemies more likely to drop the good ones. Some identified pieces glow, which observers read as rarity. Capcom has not posted a public color chart, drop table, or pity system. Until October 9, assume that identifying every junk helm is how you go broke, and that a glowing spoil from a Giant or Fimbl is the one you pay for first.
If RC costs feel punishing on day one, stop. Do a Lost Rite for fixed gear, then come back with a clearer sense of what your vocation actually wants. Relics are a slot machine with a cover charge. Lost Rites are a known reward behind a fight.
What can roll
Confirmed or strongly shown in previews:
- Higher raw attack or defence than typical base-game finds.
- Statistical bonuses you can build around.
- Special effects and unique skills that change a rotation, not just a number.
- Upgraded versions of existing vocation skills, shown with a dark-red visual when used.
- Multiple skills on a single weapon — a Magick Archer bow called out in coverage as Singular Sanguine Radiance arrived with three skills and a visible power spike.
Unconfirmed: a full affix list, whether you can reroll, whether enhancement behaves like regular gear, whether fashion sets like Northern Attire can roll as relics (treat the pre-order set as inn-storage cosmetics until proven otherwise). Do not theorycraft a spreadsheet on rumors. Bookmark this page and wait for in-game tooltips.
Freki, meat, and buried relics
One early Norgan quest pairs you with Freki, a huge direwolf that likes hare and can smell relics. After that scripted beat, you can feed Freki meat whenever you want to send it after buried relics. Follow the wolf; pick up what it finds. The August title update added a toggle so camp meat is not eaten from item shortcuts — turn that on if you are tired of feeding your own dinner to a skill hotkey. Keep a stack of meat in pawn inventory specifically for Freki, separate from camp cooking.
Freki is not a fourth party member in the vocation sense. It is a north-only tool for the relic cycle. If you skip the scripted hunt, you skip the free sniffer. Do that quest even if you hate fetch tasks.
Relics versus Lost Rites gear
Two progression tracks, on purpose:
- Relics — random after appraisal, Norgan-only to obtain and identify, usable everywhere once identified.
- Lost Rites equipment — fixed properties, found in twelve Pathfinder dungeons on the original map, becomes stronger when enhanced, described as rare kit once held by past Arisen.
Kinoshita’s intended play is parallel. You might clear an early Lost Rite from level 20, hit a wall on a later trial, farm relics in Norgan, then finish the dungeon. Or you might be a level-capped veteran who walks into Norgan first and only later tests relic toys on red-glow enemies. Neither order is wrong. Mixing them is the design. See Lost Rites for dungeon pacing and endgame builds for how we will rank rolls after launch.
You cannot make Lost Rites drop unidentified spoils by wishing. You cannot appraise in Vernworth. If a guide or video says otherwise before launch, it is guessing.
Transmog is after the roll, not instead of it
Oyama confirmed a side quest chain in Dark Arisen that unlocks changing the appearance of weapons and armor obtained in Norgan while keeping their stats. That is not Art of Metamorphosis and not the Northern Attire pre-order set. Farm the relic, pay Jiera, then dress the roll — details and the interview caveats live on transmog. Do not vendor a god roll because it is ugly. Do not assume a 2024 Vernworth iron sword can wear a Norgan skin until the in-game UI says so.
Pain points to expect
Inventory space. Unidentified items are dead weight until Jiera sees them. Use pawn carry, dismiss hires with up to 99 gifted items, and do not start a Giant hunt already overweight.
RC starvation. Hiring three meta pawns and identifying every spoil is how you stall. Pick one.
Bad rolls. Randomized skills can waste a slot you needed for a climb or a heal. Six weapon skills from the August update give you more room to keep a relic toy and a reliable bread-and-butter skill. Warfarer can Rearmament around a weird roll; other vocations have to live with it or stash it.
Weather. Some of the best relic hunts will be in storms where you cannot see the wolf. Bring thermal gear and a pawn who can revive you. Norgan details sit on the Norgan page.
Appraisal budget for week one
On launch day, identify a small sample from each spoil tier so you learn the language of the tooltips. Keep RC in reserve for a high-tier drop from the Norgan Giant, Fimbl, or a named hunt. Feed Freki on a timer, not every minute. When you land a unique skill that changes a vocation, screenshot it, then take that loadout into a Lost Rite before you smash the rest of your crystals chasing a duplicate. For party synergy, read Pawns and party comps. For class skill grids, stay on Vocations and vocation ranks.
Relics are how Dark Arisen asks veterans to care about loot again. They are not a substitute for learning to climb, camp, and warp. If your six-skill bar is still empty in two slots, fix that in How to Play before you pay Jiera to bless a bow you cannot use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before the October 9, 2026 launch.
Where do relics drop?
Only in Norgan, from monsters and exploration (including Freki hunts). Appraisal is at the Norgandian Settlement with Jiera.
Can I use relic gear in Lost Rites?
Yes. Identified relics can be worn anywhere, including Lost Rites. You just cannot farm or appraise relics outside Norgan.
How does Freki work?
After a scripted Norgan beat, feed the direwolf meat and follow it to buried relics. Keep camp meat off your item shortcuts so you do not eat the bait.
Are relic stats random?
Yes after appraisal: stats, effects, and sometimes unique or upgraded skills. Lost Rites loot is the fixed-property track instead.
Should I spend all my Rift Crystals on appraisal?
No. RC also hires pawns. Identify high-tier spoils first and keep a buffer. Party costs are covered on Pawns.
